Saboten is our favourite tonkatsu restaurant in Singapore. This is our 2nd time eating here and happy everytime! :)
For any set ordered at Saboten, it comes with free-flow refill of cabbage, miso soup and green tea. Also c/w 1 serve of green tea icecream for dessert to complete the meal. ^_^
Sesame seeds are provided in a bowl with a mortar grinder. After grinding the sesame seeds, tonkatsu sweet sauce can be added for dipping. The bowl on the right below shows the sesame seeds after being grinded.
There is a wide variety of filling/variations for tonkatsu. Pork loin, prawns, chicken breast, asparagus, cheese, mentaiko, ratatouille and some others that I can't remember now.
What we love about Saboten is the crispy batter that is not crunchy till it hurts that top of your mouth. That was my experience with eating at Tonkichi (both at Takashimaya and Isetan Scotts outlets). After eating at Tonkichi, the top of mouth hurt so bad I never went back a second time. Eating anything after was a bitch.
Conversely, the batter at Saboten is crispy, light and melts in your mouth. Awesome! Also, the pork loin and chicken breast at Tonkichi is quite dry compared to the these ones served at Saboten. Absolutely love their prawn tonkatsu. Definitely our fav. tonkatsu in Singapore by far.
