The husband and I found recently made this stall our regular morning Sunday breakfast haunt. While we have just newly stumbled upon this place, it has been around for years now. I've heard it from my friends a few years back but never had the motivation to go try it. So 3 weeks ago, we decided to be adventurous and wake at 8am on a Sunday morning in search of noodles to satisfy my craving.
Located in Whampoa Market in Balestier, these noodles are to die for, (in my opinion). They serve homemade noodles, both in soup and dry versions. While most people would order the soup version, frankly, I prefer the dry version as the black sauce they use together with the chilli makes in heavenly. :)
They are open everyday except Monday, from 7am - 2pm. Although, try not to come too late, like 1.30ish as their noodles would most probably have been sold out by then.
I believe they serve a few types of handmade noodles (though honestly, I can't be 100% sure they're handmade, but who cares? They taste awesome!). So mainly ban-mian, you-mian and the mee-hoon-kweh (as seen below, which is the husband's favourite). He says it's something different than eating just plain noodles. As seen below, mee-hoon-kweh is like a square piece of "noodle" made of flour.
Frankly, the taste and texture of mee-hoon-kweh is too starchy for me. I prefer my noodles more "clean" and "light" - hence my choice at this stall being the you-mian which is thinner than ban-mian.
We would usually order the $4 (min price) versions which already serves a pretty generous helping of abalones or prawns or both ( for the version of both prawns & abalones, it's minimum $6).
And my favourite would be the abalone you-mian:
For me, I guess it's the "killer" combination of sweet from the dark/black sauce and the spicy tangy-ness from the chilli. Awesome stuff!
The regular wait here is approx. 15 - 20mins. So far, we've never had to wait longer than that, although I've read from other people's experience that some end up waiting for 30mins or more.
They're not the only food stall in this food market, so while waiting for this handmade noodle to arrive, we'd usually order something else. On a side note, the "pau store" directly behind this Whampoa Handmade Noodles does pretty nice Tau-Sar Pau. More filling than bun, just the way I like it. :) But that is another post for another time.
