Our craving for good quality japanese grill is always satisfied with the Robatayaki counter at Mikuni.
Most Robatayaki restaurants in Singapore claim to serve the freshest, air-flown produce from various regions in Japan, including Mikuni. Frankly, while it cannot be compared to the freshness of sushi/sashimi available at Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, considering that travel time between Tokyo and Singapore by air is typically a 7-hour flight, we're more than happy with the quality of the produce being served at Mikuni.
My favourite dish so far: King crab leg topped with sea urchin cream. Absolutely divine, very meaty. Best of all - smells and tastes of the ocean.
Our next favourite: Prawns. Yes, that's how you would order from the Robatayaki counter. Just let the service crew know you're after prawns. There is no seasoning or style of cooking mentioned (because basically there is none - just simply grilled to perfection). Size-wise, they're pretty standard sizes which are quite large anyway. Their fresh produce is displayed right in front of you, in between you and the chef. (see my 2nd photo above). So if you're after a particular prawn or fish, you just have to point it out directly to the chef. The meat of the prawn is solid, though not tough, sweet yet slightly salty.
Our third favourite: Roast Pork. This simple dish looks like what it is - simple. However, it is grilled to perfection, nothing less. The layers between the lean meat and the fatty meat do not contrast much in terms of "chew-iness" and texture. This is an important point for us - because all too often, in our opinion, roast pork available elsewhere, has lean meat which is too tough (probably from being cooked for too long) and the fatty meat being too mushy. The sharp contrast does not sit well on our palate. Instead these pieces of roast pork have good consistency between the layers, just a faint aroma of grilling, very lightly salted. Again, everything well thought-out and in moderation.
The fourth dish that is our regular favourite: This for us is probably one of the most "complicated-tasting" dish. The reason for saying this is because this dish, as you can see below, is served with a sauce/broth that is tasty, sweet, slightly salty and faint aroma of wine. We never fail to order this dish in all the times that we've eaten here. Except now, for future visits, it probably has to make way for us to try other fantastic dishes available from the selection. :)
Finally, to wash it all down, the last dish for the night: Tempura soba. The Soba itself is probably the least exciting of them all, but we don't mind. The Tempura though, I'm impressed by. The batter is as we like it - not overly thick. Just a nice thin layer coating the prawns and vegetables. Definite + point: it is slightly crunchy. Not crunchy hard like it hurts to bite though it - just lightly crunchy. Again, the batter is perfect and done in moderation. Heavenly.
After all this, we had no more room for desserts, but this was complimentary: Balls of green tea wrapped in white chocolate and red bean cubes.
For my husband and myself, the total bill came up to SGD220 for the whole dinner. While not cheap, it is worth it.
P.S: Mikuni also has a sushi/sashimi counter, which we have not yet tried. But we will definitely give it a shot after this pregnancy. :)
