On one of our recent BKK trips, I decided to bring the husband to a supposedly "best sushi place in BKK".
We got off at Thonglor BTS and it was on Soi 23. We thought we could walk from the BTS to the restaurant... hellll noo.. it was wayyy too far. Half way at around Soi 9, we took a cab. We told the cabbie "Honmono sushi, Soi 23". I have a feeling Soi 23 meant more to the cabbie than Honmono Sushi.
When we reached Soi 23, we could see nothing except a small light at the end of the road. We told the cabbie to stop at the entrance of Soi 23. We got off and walked approx. 5 mins and realise we had in the end gotten the right place.
It was a Tuesday night and possible why it was not crowded. 25 Feb 2014. We did not have baby with us. She stayed back in Singapore with our helper. It was a working holiday for me.
We were famished by the time we reached the restaurant. There was only 4 other tables amongst the 20 odd vacant tables. Reeally??? This is supposed to be BKK's most famous and 'best' sushi place??
Obviously because we were starving, we ordered what seemed like a lot.
There was:
Sashimi Salad
Can't remember the name of this dish - but I'm sure it's on the photo menu somewhere
Another angle of the same dish
After flipping over the sushi, I think I might have figured out why this place is popular with the locals. Just check out the ratio of fish to rice! I am not kidding when I say the length of the salmon is the same as that of my index finger. Approx. 6cm long.
Chutoro Sushi
Again, check out the ratio of chutoro to rice. You won't get this in Singapore, that's for sure!
Foie Gras Sushi - Honestly, it's quite yummy :)
I had this tempura with their inaniwa udon as below
After we had paid the bill, I asked the waitress which was the original/first Honmono sushi outlet, and she said "this one". OK, so "this one", it is! :)
Our entire bill came up to 5200Bht which is approx. S$208 for 2 pax. Very affordable by SG standards for such sushi, but I'm guessing it's pricey by BKK standards.
Verdict: Should try for anyone who hasn't been to Honmono, but I'm not sure if it's a must-eat second time around. :)
